To the Editor:
I strongly urge the voters in Maine Senate District 1 (York, Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick and Ogunquit) to re-elect Peter Bowman for State Senator. Senator Bowman is exceptionally well-qualified and has demonstrated his passionate commitment to his local communities and the state of Maine through his ability to serve effectively in the State Senate. He represents the voters with strong leadership, compassion and great integrity.
I have been privileged to know Captain Bowman since 1987, when he was the Commander of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. I was so impressed by his expertise and clear thinking that I nominated him to serve on the 1993 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC), where he performed with distinction. He was a highly effective CEO who initiated the outstanding union-management teamwork for which the Shipyard is still known. When Captain Bowman arrived at the Shipyard, all of the submarines at the Shipyard were behind schedule and over budget; when he departed, all of the submarines at the Shipyard were on schedule and on budget. His successors built upon these achievements, and the most recent BRAC termed the Shipyard's performance the "gold standard".
Captain Bowman brought that same commitment to excellence to the State Senate. In his first term, he made significant progress in advancing the critical issues of fiscal restraint, education, economic development and health care. He worked hard to pass 48 bills into law. Senator Bowman helped pass a strong chemical oversight policy to eliminate dangerous chemicals from children's toys. He spearheaded legislation to give school districts greater freedom to negotiate consolidation plans. And, he helped establish a state-wide tax relief program for senior citizens. His dedication to his constituents is reflected in the legislative work he does.
Peter has the energy, drive, dedication and compassion to help navigate Maine through this period of economic downturn. His knowledge and experience is critical to keeping Maine a place where both families and business can thrive. Senator Bowman is the kind of person that Maine needs in the State Senate. This is why I strongly urge you to re-elect Senator Bowman on November 4th.
